New 2016 Poultry Litter Biochar Field Trials in Australia

Energy Farmers Australia has published information on their 2016 poultry litter field trials. These trials are a follow on to successful 2015 trials designed to measure potash response to the application of wheat straw biochar in a wheat crop. The farm was chosen because of its low potassium responsive soils.

The 2016 trials were seeded on the 27th April. 80kg of wheat was sown. Treatments included:

The recently published Advancing Organics Management in Washington State: The Waste to Fuels Technology Partnership, report presents work on the Washington State University Waste to Fuels Technology project in 2013-2015. The report highlights how "biorefinery processes including anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and wood pellet production can be co-located at compost facilities. The modeled return on investment (ROI) for food scrap digesters was 34%.

Author Bjorn Embren highlights findings from the city of Stockholm Sweden--where the city's landscaping department (which the author leads) has been using biochar as a component of its tree planting mix for 10 years.
