The Society of Biochar Initiatives works to highlight and support biochar projects and organizations in India. The group had its first meeting November 1, 2009 in Pune, Maharashtra, India with eight founding members present in addition to eight other new members. In January 2010, it was formally registered as an NGO.
The first highlighted work comes from the organization ODAM, based in Tamil Nadu, India (more information on ODAM at http://www.odam.in/joomla/index.php). ODAM, with support from the Siemenpuu Foundation in Finland, conducted a series of biochar field trials in Southern India using common feedstocks to produce the biochar. The field trials report is now available. (photo courtesy of ODAM).
