Your gift supports IBI as we scale biochar solutions to meet global net-zero goals, revitalize ecosystems, and strengthen communities.

Biochar is one of the most powerful tools we have for building climate change resilience from the ground up.

Why Biochar?

Made by transforming waste biomass like crop residues or wood chips into a stable form of carbon, biochar stores that carbon safely in soil for hundreds to thousands of years. But its impact doesn’t stop there. When added to soil, biochar can improve water retention, boost plant fertility, and restore life to degraded lands.

For farmers, that means stronger harvests and more reliable incomes—especially in regions already feeling the strain of droughts, floods, and changing weather patterns.

For communities, it means turning local waste into local opportunity.

For the planet, it means a natural carbon removal solution that scales with our collective will to act.

In supporting IBI, your gift is a catalyst for the biochar industry, supporting healthy soils, resilient ecosystems, circular economies, and a livable climate.

Each gift, big or small, helps drive us toward our strategic goals. Here’s how your support translates to real impact.

Make your donation monthly to sustain IBI’s programs year-round and accelerate biochar’s impact on the world’s intersectional crises.

What You Make Possible

In the last 20 years, IBI has created a community of members, supporters, researchers, practitioners, producers, and professionals advocating for biochar development.

In the next 20, we have big plans for impact. Sample a few of goals from our 2024–2030 strategic plan:

  • Industry Integration & Scaling
We aim to create 10 corporate partnerships by 2030 across three priority sectors (e.g. coffee, palm oil, built environment) to integrate biochar into existing industrial value chains.

  • Education, Capacity Building & Global Networking
We will train 2,000 individuals by 2030 via webinars, workshops, training programs, and support institution-level biochar curricula.

  • Policy, Advocacy & Climate Influence
IBI advocates biochar’s inclusion in climate strategies, carbon markets, national policies, and regulations. We aim to participate in 20 international climate forums by 2030 to influence decision-makers.
