The 1st Biochar Technology Stakeholders’ Meeting was hosted by Bowen University, Iwo in March 2015. The meeting was held in order to draw the attention of participants to the many benefits of biochar technology for sustainable agricultural development, climate change mitigation, soil remediation and energy production. The event was the first of its kind in Nigeria and attracted both academics from nation-al universities and research institutes, as well as farmers from local communities.
The major output of the meeting was the formation of the Nigerian Biochar Initiative (now Biochar Initiative of Nigeria), which, according to the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) in its January/February Newsletter, 2016, is the first major regional biochar group operating in Africa.
Biochar Initiative of Nigeria since has held 2 Annual Conferences after the 1st Biochar Technology Stakeholders meeting in, Bowen University Iwo and University of Ibadan in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The 4th annual conference will be hosted by Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. An Executive Committee is now is now in place while member-ship drive is on.
