About the Academy

IBI is thrilled to partner with ECHO Asia to deliver IBI’s Biochar Academy at their Small Farm Resource Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand this 5–12 May 2024.

IBI’s Biochar Academy is an immersive in-person, multi-day, hands-on workforce development course designed to equip emerging and future biochar professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to become effective biochar advocates, educators, and practitioners. This unique experiential learning program blends expert presentations and demonstrations with hands-on practice to engage participants with contemporary knowledge and real-world biochar production and application. By emphasizing peer-learning and networking, the Biochar Academy fosters innovation and strengthens the global community of biochar practitioners through place-based learning at host locations around the world.

Cost & Accommodations

Tuition Cost: Cost of participation is ฿15,000 Thai Baht (TBH). This includes all learning sessions, training materials, lunch and coffee daily May 6-11. (Only overnight participants should arrive to site evening of 5 May.)

Overnight Accommodation: Shared or private accommodation options are available on-site on a limited basis, first-come first-serve. Room costs range from 300-800 TBH per night, depending on shared vs private space, fan vs AC. A breakfast & supper meal package is available for 300 TBH per day. Airport pickup and drop-off can also be arranged for 1000 TBH round trip. Check-in is from 3:00-5:00 pm Sunday, 5 May and check-out is by 9:30 am Sunday, 12 May. (See accommodation photo examples at the bottom of the page.)

Program Details

Participants will:

• Hear from biochar experts to gain insight into the current and future state of biochar research, commercial activity, and opportunities
• Become equipped with essential knowledge for training others in biochar fundamentals
• Make biochar using low-tech methods and identify a wide variety of applications for biochar
• Discuss the relationship between biochar and climate change mitigation
• Recognize the growing number of biochar production technologies, their co-products, scaling potential and more
• Grasp the carbon removal marketplace and opportunities for biochar producers and farmers with a regional focus on Southeast Asia
• Network with other biochar stakeholders working in research, farmer education, carbon removal markets, biochar production and market development

Day 3: 7 May 2024: Sampling, Analysis, Standards, Certifications

Day 4: 8 May 2024 (evening in Chiang Mai): Agricultural Uses

Day 5: 9 May 2024: Non-agricultural Uses

Day 6: 10 May 2024: Economics: Carbon Markets and Business Development

Day 7: 11 May 2024 (final day of curriculum): Local Site Visits, Closing Ceremonies

Cancellation Policy:
Cancel before April 5, 2024 for a 50% refund. Cancellations after April 5 are not eligible for a refund.
