Wales is a land of deep-rooted agricultural traditions, ancient woodlands, and a growing wave of climate innovation. From its rolling green hills and pasturelands to community-led sustainability initiatives, the Welsh countryside offers a compelling backdrop for exploring biochar’s potential.

This region is home to forward-thinking producers, researchers, and environmental organizations working at the intersection of land stewardship, renewable energy, and carbon removal. During the Study Tour, participants will visit operational biochar production sites, observe live field demonstrations, and engage with practitioners leading the way in composting, soil regeneration, forestry applications, and waste valorization.

About the Program

From rural farms to small-scale pyrolysis hubs, the Study Tour in Wales will spotlight how local leadership and global expertise converge to advance climate solutions, and how biochar is becoming a key part of that story.

• Guided walk through the Woodtek Biochar farm, where participants will witness the full biochar production process, from feedstock sourcing to final product handling.
• See live demonstrations of various pyrolysis technologies, including both fixed and mobile systems.
• Engage in technical and operational discussions with the engineering and production teams.
• Explore practical applications of biochar in agriculture, ecological restoration, and construction.
• In-depth exchanges with UK biochar leaders, including producers, engineers, researchers, and policy advocates.
• Extended field day, with a site visit to either Mersey Biochar or Black Bull Biochar (depending on group), offering a deep dive into innovation and scale-up strategies.
• Connect with the Welsh landscape, blending technical learning with outdoor experiences: farm-side talks, soft nature walks, and picnic-style lunches.
