On‑station trials in Northwest India show that incorporating rice‑residue biochar at moderate rates, alongside regenerative crop residue management and water‑smart practices such as direct-seeded rice (DSR) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD), lowers seasonal global warming potential and irrigation demand while maintaining or increasing yields.
This ongoing work is strengthening the case for biochar as a practical, farmer‑viable tool to reduce the environmental footprint of intensive rice without sacrificing profitability or agronomic performance.
