Unpacking Biochar LCA, MRV, and Carbon Credit Certification

13 March 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

This interactive webinar session is designed for biochar project developers—both seasoned and new—who want to navigate the complexities of carbon credit certification.

Achieving certification requires a high-quality Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and a robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) process to quantify carbon benefits and attract buyers. Attendees will gain hands-on insights into setting up an LCA, integrating it into ongoing MRV, and understanding key certification pathways.

The session will also cover available carbon standards, buyer markets, and the essential components of project design documentation for carbon credit monetization.

What You’ll Learn:

✅ How to develop a credible LCA using practical examples

✅ Best practices for MRV to meet buyer and certification requirements

✅ Key carbon credit standards and buyer expectations

✅ Steps to streamline certification and maximize credit value

This session is hosted by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and co-led by Tristan Springer, CEO & Co-Founder of CarbonPilot, a platform simplifying carbon credit management for biochar projects.

Luisa Marin

Luisa Marín has over 25 years of experience in the NGO sector, focusing her career on environmental conservation and sustainable development. She served as Country Director for General Biochar Systems in Mexico, the first industrial-scale biochar production initiative in the country. She worked at The Nature Conservancy and led operations at Conservation International Mexico, where she collaborated on development projects funded by international cooperation. Her career also includes a strong focus on social and community inclusion within environmental projects, ensuring the active participation of local communities. Additionally, she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Latin American Biochar Institute, promoting biochar as a sustainable solution to mitigate climate change. Throughout her career, Luisa has consistently demonstrated a commitment to environmental management, excelling in policy formulation, project management, and stakeholder collaboration to create a global impact.

Tristan Springer

Tristan is the CEO and Co-Founder of CarbonPilot, a platform streamlining carbon credit management for biochar projects. His firsthand experience developing biochar projects revealed a critical challenge: while carbon credits are essential for project viability, the certification process was prohibitively complex and costly. Drawing on his background in traceability software and experience guiding multiple projects through carbon credit certification and sales, Tristan created CarbonPilot to solve these monetization challenges. As a graduate of the inaugural Biochar Academy and having overseen numerous successful carbon credit sales, he works to help biochar producers accelerate their path to market.
