2024 was an incredible year for biochar education, filled with cross-sectoral, multi-national collaborations joining a cohesive effort to scale biochar awareness.
At IBI this year, we partnered with numerous dedicated organizations around the world to create new educational tools to catalyze biochar adoption and scale international capacity for carbon removal.
I want to thank all of our partners for their tremendous commitment and efforts toward a healthier planet.
This year, we delivered two in-person events: the 2024 Biochar Academy in Thailand that was co-organized with ECHO Asia Impact Center, trained 70 biochar practitioners from 18 countries, and distributed 16 scholarships to regionally-based participants. The 2024 Study Tour in Italy, co-organized with the Italian Biochar Association (ICHAR), was attended by 35 multi-national practitioners. IBI also supported a Biochar Training event in Pakistan, co-organized with the National University of Science and Technology of Pakistan, connecting researchers and farmers for biochar adoption.
We also reached a wide audience through our online learning platforms, training over 475 individuals through self-directed, online courses. The International Biochar Initiative’s online biochar education courses are designed to empower biochar professionals, farmers, carbon professionals, and more with the knowledge and skills to harness the incredible potential of biochar. We launched new online learning courses including “All About Biochar: A Comprehensive Introductory Course to the Biochar Industry” and the free micro-learning course, Biochar 101: What is Biochar?. Additionally, through live webinars, we were able to offer biochar education to 2,000+ attendees in 2024, featuring fantastic programming including the Biochar Project Finance webinar delivered in partnership with Kita.Earth and the Navigating Carbon Dioxide Removal event co-delivered with GRAIN Ecosystem and Carbonfuture.
In 2025, even more education opportunities are upcoming, both online and in-person. With in-person programs running in Thailand, Japan, Kenya, Colombia, and Washington State (USA), we hope you are able to join us soon as a participant, speaker, or an event sponsor. We will also launch new online courses, including a live Virtual Graduate Lecture Series in biochar and a self-directed online “Biochar on the Carbon Market” course.
IBI will continue to center biochar education long into the future, in alignment with our mission to empower communities and inspire industries to integrate biochar-based solutions towards healthier ecosystems and economies worldwide. Learn more about the IBI Strategic Plan 2024-2030.
