Request for Proposals

The International Biochar Initiative (IBI), the US Biochar Initiative (USBI), and funding partners, are seeking proposals for the 2024 global biochar industry market research report and stakeholder assessment.

The market research report and stakeholder assessment is intended to:

  • Represent the second annual Global Biochar Market Survey. 
  • Compliment and leverage publicly available biochar market research
  • Provide a clear picture of biochar industry market size, scale, and potential market growth.
  • Identify market segments by product and use in each geographical region.
  • Characterize biochars and biochar-based products according to the needs of the consumer, the added value, costs, benefits, and competition.
  • Assess market performance, including market potential, such as Total Achievable Market, Serviceable Available Market, and Serviceable Obtainable Market.
  • Obtain cost models for each major product stream at small, medium, and industrial scales.
  • Create quantifiable data for the global biochar industry’s use in planning, fundraising, and expansion.
  • Create quantifiable data to engage with stakeholders that can help the biochar industry scale quickly.
  • Identify key drivers of and obstacles to growth, for the biochar industry and for biochar companies and organizations.
  • Identify key end-use market segments that USBI and IBI should focus on in future efforts. 
  • Ensure data collection from all major continents.

We request that applicants propose projects that achieve the goals above, including at least the following scopings for this project:

  • Coordinate with USBI and IBI to develop a web-based survey
  • Launch and manage a web-based survey
  • Analyze survey data to generate defensible estimates for global and regional biochar production, biochar business revenues, and other key metrics.
  • Direct interviews with biochar producers and limited surveys 
  • Use data to develop compelling tables and figures to relay survey results
  • Collaborate with USBI and IBI to develop a final project report
  • Participate in at least one webinar upon release of the final report 

The target date for completion of the market research report and final deliverables is February 2025.
