Welcoming Spring

A few days ago, we welcomed the arrival of spring in Mexico. I couldn’t help but feel inspired by its sense of renewal: a season that celebrates life, color, and new beginnings.

But it also made me reflect on something else.

Spring feels gentle and beautiful when it arrives, yet the process that makes it possible is anything but simple. It depends on countless forces — shifting temperatures, sunlight, seasonal cycles, and natural rhythms — all working together in ways we rarely stop to consider.

Even the sun, which we experience as warmth and light, is a source of immense energy — powerful enough to sustain life, yet also capable of destruction. And still, under the right conditions, and in balance with everything around it, it becomes one of the essential forces that make life possible.

In a way, it reminded me of biochar.

Biochar is also born from an intense and transformative process. Through pyrolysis (under very specific conditions) biomass is converted into a stable and powerful material. Out of that transformation comes something with the potential to restore soils, reduce emissions, and offer a tangible contribution to a more resilient future.

And just like spring, this transformation doesn’t happen in isolation.

It is the result of many interconnected elements — science, technology, people, ecosystems, and time. Each plays a role. Each is necessary. And only together do they create something meaningful and lasting.

This year, as IBI celebrates its 20th anniversary, I find myself thinking about that same idea.

This milestone is not the result of a single moment, but of a long journey shaped by many contributions; from those who laid its foundation with vision and purpose, to the members, partners, and supporters who continue to engage, learn, and help grow this community.

To all of you — those who read, participate, collaborate, and support — thank you.

I hope we continue strengthening this community and the shared purpose that brings us together.
