Strategic Plan 2024–2030

VISION

A thriving, healthy planet for all.

MISSION

Empower communities and inspire industries to integrate biochar-based solutions towards healthier ecosystems and economies worldwide.

The International Biochar Initiative’s (IBI) mission is to scale biochar to reach its full potential and achieve global net zero targets by empowering communities and industries. Through strategic partnerships, innovation, education and advocacy, we aim to accelerate and scale the adoption of biochar technologies worldwide, fostering sustainable business models, and facilitate community-based action that combats climate change and create a resilient future for generations to come.

Leveraging nearly 20 years supporting global biochar industry growth and network based in the majority of countries around the world, IBI is the organization that:

1. Catalyzes industry growth by scaling biochar solutions to realize biochar’s potential as a multi-pronged, circular economy solution to climate change, by:
  • Creating 10 corporate partnerships by 2030 in at least three priority industries with a high scaling potential in terms of sector and/or value chain and/or geography (i.e. coffee, palm oil, and the built environment). Through direct engagement with the priority industries, IBI will:
    • Identify the priority industries to engage with.
    • Create industry roadmaps for how each industry can use biochar and biochar carbon removal for net zero and sustainability pathways, encompassing the “environmental” and “social” of ESG efforts.
    • Mainstream biochar inclusion into one existing standard for each of the key identified industries by 2028.
  • Developing standards guidance efforts
    • Identify global laboratories according to external biochar and carbon standards guidelines, also in partnership with relevant key players.
  • Informing and contributing to legislation or regulations beneficial to the biochar industry internationally.
  • Advocating and educating about biochar across the priority sectors, within regional and national governments, with international climate change bodies, the carbon dioxide removal ecosystem, climate change solution investors, the media, and other stakeholders.
2. Create/ maintain/ curate/ promote a community of sustainable and ethical practice for biochar to increase biochar understanding, expertise and adoption of biochar by maintaining and expanding a biochar knowledge hub focused on:
  • Knowledge dissemination: providing up-to-date information on biochar research, technology, market and best practice. Through its website, publications, and newsletters, it shares resources on biochar production, application, and its environmental and agricultural benefits.
  • Global networking:
    • Fostering collaboration between researchers, practitioners, policy makers and industry leaders. IBI hosts webinars, workshops, and conferences that connect biochar experts around the world, facilitating the exchange of ideas and innovations.
    • Supporting vibrant biochar associations through direct involvement and/or collaboration and IBI membership on all continents.
  • Standards and guidance: establishing/maintaining and promoting standards for biochar production and global use. Guidance ensures the quality and sustainability of biochar practices, and help build confidence in biochar technologies and applications.
  • Capacity building:
    • Support education and training initiatives to build capacity in biochar production and use.
    • Empowering communities to implement biochar systems that address environmental challenges such as soil degradation, climate change, and waste management.
  • Promoting research: actively supporting scientific research by fostering partnerships between academic institutions, private sector entities, and government organizations.
