Biochar Testing Laboratories for Certification

Background

The International Biochar Initiative (IBI) previously managed its own Biochar Standards and Certification Program. As of 2025, IBI has merged its standards framework with the World Biochar Certificate (WBC) administered by Carbon Standards International (CSI).

All biochar certification is now conducted under the World Biochar Certificate, and applicants must follow the requirements and procedures established by CSI.

IBI no longer operates a separate certification program.

Laboratory Information for Biochar Testing

For the benefit of biochar producers seeking certification under the World Biochar Certificate, IBI provides below a list of laboratories that:

  • Are endorsed by CSI, or
  • Have indicated that they are capable of conducting the laboratory analyses required under CSI standards.

Testing must follow strict quality control requirements according to standardized laboratory procedures. Laboratories should operate under appropriate accreditation (e.g., ISO or relevant national accreditation bodies) and have demonstrated competence in analytical chemistry relevant to biochar characterization.

Biochar producers are responsible for ensuring that laboratories follow the current CSI testing methodologies and requirements.

IBI does not require the use of any particular laboratory and does not make any claims regarding the validity of laboratory results. Producers are free to select any appropriately accredited laboratory that complies with CSI requirements.

IBI assumes no liability for laboratory testing outcomes.
