From Bamboo Waste to Biochar Concrete: Thailand’s Journey from Learning to Application

10 November @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST

What if the bamboo offcuts piling up in eastern Thailand could end up in the roads we drive on?

The International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and the International Biochar Asia Pacific Trade Association (IBAP) invite you to a joint webinar with leaders and field experts from IBAP’s membership. Together we’ll look at how biochar is taking shape in Thailand, and how it’s moving from learning to real-world use in sustainable development.

In this webinar, we’ll explore:

  • Beyond Biochar: Exploring a Greener Local Economy. How Wongphai turns more than 20,000 tonnes of bamboo offcuts in eastern Thailand into sustainable biochar. It builds on what the team learned through the IBI Academy and the IBAP community, and it creates local jobs, removes carbon, and opens up future uses, like reusing production heat to treat bamboo and developing biochar for greener building materials.
  • From Ideas to Evidence: Biochar in Concrete and Road Materials. How these ideas move toward real applications through research on biochar-based materials, including porous asphalt and permeable concrete for road construction.

Two live Q&A rounds give you time to put your questions straight to the speakers. Got a question already? Send it ahead through the pre-event form and help shape the discussion at International Biochar Initiative.

Apiniti Jotisankasa
Prof. Dr. Apiniti Jotisankasa

President, International Biochar Asia Pacific Trade Association (IBAP)

Prof. Dr. Apiniti is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Kasetsart University. He holds an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Imperial College London. He specializes in geo-environmental engineering, unsaturated soil mechanics, soil bio-engineering and biochar applications. His biochar research looks at how biochar-amended soils retain water, resist cracking and control erosion in tropical climates. His honors include the Young Technologist Award and The King of Thailand Vetiver Certificate of Excellence (2015 & 2023).

Nick Cheng
Nick Cheng

Chief of Sustainability & Communications, Wongphai

Nick is a sustainability strategist who works on decarbonization through high-integrity carbon removal and circular economy solutions. With a background in FinTech, SaaS and Industry 4.0, he connects environmental science with industrial practice. He uses life cycle assessment (LCA) to verify greenhouse gas reductions and durable carbon removal through biochar. A UC Berkeley graduate, he holds a Master’s in Environmental Technology and Management from KMUTT. He has contributed to Climate Action Week for Sustainable Tourism and the Global Biochar Exchange in Japan.

Peerapong Jitsangiam
Prof. Dr. Peerapong Jitsangiam

Director, Multidisciplinary Research Institute, Chiang Mai University

Prof. Dr. Peerapong is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Chiang Mai University, where he also directs the Advanced Railway Civil and Foundation Engineering Center (CMU-RailCFC). He holds a Ph.D. from Curtin University, Australia, where he later worked as a senior lecturer. His research covers pavement and geotechnical engineering. His recent work turns agricultural residues into biochar and carbon removal materials, and combines biochar with recycled plastic waste to make porous asphalt and permeable concrete without losing structural performance.
