Q1 2026 Insights: Biochar scales as markets mature

A few months ago, I shared a reflection here about how the sector was shifting—from pilots toward infrastructure—and how intense that moment felt.

Working through the Q1 2026 Industrial Round-Up and Market Intelligence Brief, that trend hasn’t just continued—it’s become more defined.

What stands out now is not just growth, but also structure.

  • On one side, industrial activity is accelerating: large-scale projects, long-term offtakes, and deeper integration into sectors like steel, construction, and waste management.
  • On the other, the market is becoming more demanding: stronger MRV expectations, tighter supply, and a clear shift toward delivery certainty, long-term contracting, and “investment-grade” project structures.

At the same time, demand is evolving portfolio based strategies and industrial applications are expanding biochar’s role beyond carbon markets.

What feels different from last quarter is this:
it’s no longer just about scaling, but about how that scale is achieved.

So I’m curious to hear from you again:
How are you navigating this shift toward a more structured and demanding market?

Where do you see the biggest challenges right now: execution, standards, financing, or something else?
