April 2024 | Read the full Global Biochar Industry Update

The solar eclipse that charted a path of totality across North America earlier this month created a short sense of pause for so many people, as well as a sense of awe. In my hometown of Denver,  we saw about 70% total coverage of the sun. I find meaning in this sense of pause, especially during the month of Earth Day.

The biochar industry is experiencing energetic growth; and yet, it’s just as critical for a growing industry to pause, look up (with eclipse glasses, of course) and around us. This pause can help us address opportunities to scale in sustainable, collaborative, and intentional ways. As new programming and partnerships are preparing to launch here at IBI, we are doing just that. (Stay tuned!)

After the launch of the 2023 Global Market Report last month in partnership with the US Biochar Initiative, we saw a swell of support and interest. (If you haven’t yet viewed the findings, we invite you to join the 1,500+ people who have downloaded the report so far!) With biochar seeing a 91% CAGR over 2021 production and extreme interest for biochar organizations to support the industry in creating end markets, IBI is energized to fulfill the needs of our members and the industry at large. I chatted with Farouq Ghandour from Neutral about this earlier this month.

Alongside external industry growth, I’m pleased to share that we have a growing community at IBI! We welcomed two new people to the IBI Board of Directors: Craig Lee, who has over 35 years of experience supporting successful startups, and Luisa Marín, Managing Director of General Biochar Systems and The Next 150. I’d also like to welcome Valeria Araico to the team as IBI’s new Operations Associate. We are very fortunate to have her supporting our organization’s administration needs!

At the end of this month, members of the IBI team and Board are heading to Thailand for IBI’s 2nd annual Biochar Academy, in partnership with ECHO Asia. More than 50+ biochar practitioners, experts, and industry professionals will experience seven days of biochar training, education, and networking. We look forward to reporting back about the Academy’s impact later in May.

If you’ve been interested to level up your biochar knowledge from the comfort of your own home, I invite you to attend our webinar later this month on 24 April as we launch two new online biochar education courses.

If you have any news, jobs, calls for research, research positions, etc, coming up in May, please share with us so IBI can continue to elevate and expand your good work.
