Join us for a technical conversation exploring how different approaches to assessing biochar permanence can help us better understand carbon stability and long-term storage.

During this session, we will explore:

– What biochar permanence means and why it matters for carbon removal.

– How the H/C ratio and random reflectance measurements differ, and when they can be used together.

– How inertinite benchmarking can be used to quantify resistant carbon.

– How these measurements relate to biological degradation and the long-term stability of biochar.

The session will combine a presentation with moderated Q&A, giving participants the opportunity to engage directly with the topic and explore some of the key questions surrounding biochar permanence and carbon accounting.

Hamed Sanei

Professor Hamed Sanei is Professor of Geoscience at Aarhus University and Director of the Lithospheric Organic Carbon (LOC) Lab. His research focuses on the formation, transformation, and long-term preservation of organic carbon. He developed the inertinite benchmarking approach for biochar and leads research linking random reflectance, thermochemical resistance, and biological degradation to quantify biochar permanence and support robust carbon accounting.
