Biochar Workshop: Principles, Innovations, Production & Application

Join Western Colorado University, Couldharbour Institute, and our partners for a two-day theory-to-practice biochar workshop that explores the technology, science, and practical applications of this potent regenerative material and its many benefits.

This hands-on training workshop teaches the principles and benefits of biochar, including its production and application as a soil amendment and a tool for environmental remediation. Participants will gain hands-on experience using the ring-of-fire kiln and other kilns and learn how to apply biochar to improve soil.

Day 1: Understanding Biochar. Western Colorado University

The first day will feature classroom instruction, presentations, and panel discussions exploring the fundamentals of biochar and its growing role across the region.  Participants will learn about the science behind biochar, current research, production technologies, and real-world applications in agriculture, land restoration, wildfire mitigation, and carbon management. Ricardo Vázquez-Perales, graduate students, and special guests like Kelpie Wilson will lead the session.

Day 2: Making Biochar. Coldharbour Ranch

The second day will move from theory to practice with a hands-on biochar production workshop at the Coldharbour Ranch. Participants will take part in an applied burn day and gain firsthand experience with biochar production, including kiln technologies, feedstock selection, and considerations for producing and utilizing biochar from woody biomass.
