From Kiln to Credit: Certifying Biochar at Every Scale

21 July @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Biochar is one of the most versatile and rapidly scaling carbon removal pathways — but certification is not one-size-fits-all.

From industrial reactors to distributed kiln systems, the technology, operational context, and certification requirements vary significantly.

In this session, Rainbow Standard – an ICVCM-approved carbon registry specialising in biochar — walks through how certification works across the full spectrum of biochar project types: what the methodology requires, and key areas to focus on to support both certification and sales.

21 July
11am ET | 4pm BST

Drawing on experience across 80+ certified projects, we’ll dive into key assumptions, common challenges, MRV in practice, and how certified projects reach the market.

Expect a candid discussion of what project developers get right, what they underestimate, and what the biochar certification landscape looks like in 2026.

Richard Davis

Senior Partnerships Manager, Rainbow

With a background in carbon markets spanning large intermediaries, climate policy, and sustainability consulting, Richard works with project developers globally and manages relationships with intermediaries, offtakers, and corporate buyers, leading Rainbow’s commercial partnerships across the biochar sector.

Samara Vantil

Certification Lead, Rainbow

Samara leads certification of carbon projects across Rainbow’s methodologies and has delivered over 25 biochar projects spanning industrial and distributed systems. She has a close, practical view of what separates audit-ready projects from those that struggle. Samara brings a candid, evidence-based perspective on where certification and MRV work well, where they break down, and what developers most often underestimate.
